Agratas is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons. We design, develop and manufacture high-quality, high-performance, sustainable batteries applied to multiple use cases in the mobility and energy sectors, to match our customers’ requirements.
Somerset will be home to our new multi-billion-pound electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility in the UK. Our gigafactory will be on the Gravity Smart Campus near Bridgwater.
The cell manufacturing facility is set to be one of the biggest battery facilities in the country and by the early 2030s will contribute almost half of the projected battery manufacturing capacity required for the UK automotive sector.
Industrialisation at the Somerset site has started, with construction to be completed in phases. Battery production is set to begin in 2026.
We are working closely with local and regional partners, including Somerset Council, Bridgwater and Taunton College, and the wider Gravity Smart Campus, to deliver bespoke education and training programmes in the region, creating local jobs for local people.
The facility itself will create up to 4,000 new high-skilled green tech jobs in the area, with many thousands more expected to be created in the UK supply chain.
We will accelerate the global transition to net zero by creating an industry-leading benchmark in sustainability. Our world-class gigafactories will be powered by purpose-built renewable energy plants. We will also embed circular economy processes throughout our value chain to reuse, recycle and recover materials back into production.
We will serve customers in Passenger Vehicle, Commercial Vehicle, 2 and 3 Wheeler and Energy Storage Solution (ESS) industries, supplying state-of-the-art high energy density NMC and long lasting LFP battery cells. Agratas will also support its customers with the integration of cells into their applications, such as modules and packs. We have already secured two anchor customers, Tata Motors and JLR. They provide us with the scale to establish our global battery business.
Agratas will be driven by our pursuit of green growth and technological progress. We will develop next-generation battery technologies at new R&D Innovation Hubs in India and the UK, collaborating with world-leading universities, research institutions and strategic partners.
We are a scale-up business with a start-up mentality. Our name, derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Agra’, the world’s oldest language, stands for leadership. It reflects our ambition to be purpose driven, pioneering power for future generations.
