Starting in 2003, we created a partnership with ten local councils to provide loans to eligible homeowners to fund essential home repairs, improvements or adaptations. This was when central government was encouraging local councils to create sustainable schemes for homeowners and reduce the reliance on grant funding.
Our home improvement loans were created to provide a sustainable solution to enable homeowners to access financial help to repair their homes. In 2008, ten more local councils joined the scheme meaning we now deliver home improvement loans across Devon, Somerset, West of England, Dorset and Wiltshire.
The scope of the scheme has developed in line with individual council housing policies and we have created a range of loan schemes to cater for the needs of varying audiences from homeowners, park home owners, landlords, empty property owners and first time buyers.
Our aims are for a sustainable future where homeowners can access responsible finance to improve their home, and their life. To date, over £5 million has been recycled for the benefit of future clients.
In 2012, we registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC) which reflects our ethos and the benefit we want to bring to the communities we serve.
Our advisers live and work in the communities we serve across the South West and they will visit you in your own home to explain more about our loans, the lending process and complete a no-obligation financial assessment with you. They also work very closely with our council partners to work towards a resolution to your housing repair, improvement or renovation needs.
Our operational team are based at Wessex HQ in Bradford-on-Tone, near Taunton. They provide the core support required to ensure client queries about new and existing loans are dealt with quickly and efficiently and generate all of our loan paperwork and documents. They also ensure compliance with the Financial Conduct Authority’s rules and guidance and data protection rules.
As a not-for-profit organisation, our Board of Directors provide overall governance and strategic direction. The Board meets every quarter and brings a wide range of experience to the organisation from a variety of backgrounds including financial, housing, legal and people management.
