Our History
After the Sandhill Park Hospital for the disabled closed in 1982, a group of staff banded together and started the Albemarle Charity to support people with mental and physical disabilities in Taunton.

Originally a safe space for people to gather and network, the Albemarle now owns 18 flats specifically to house our core client group. All of our properties are in and around the Albemarle Road/Station Road area of Taunton.

About Us
We are still very much a local charity, for local people, run by local people. From the General Manager downwards, everyone pitches in as one big family. We try never to say no; we always try to say, how can we do that? We are about seeing the human being in people and meeting them where they are, on their terms.

The charity's outreach care team has five members of staff who deliver regular support sessions not only to our residents but also in the wider Taunton Community. Support can be anything from help with paying bills to social interactions, and everything in between.

The Albemarle Centre, with a staff of five, is the heart of the charity's life and doubles as a community & conference centre, providing space for a wide range of groups and projects. We also have a café that offers catering for anyone visiting us, including members of the public using our accessible changing/shower facility.

Funding comes from a range of sources, including a Somerset Council contract, room hire & rental income streams.

What we are looking for
We are looking to expand the skill range of our board of trustees, so if you have a few hours a month to spare, we would love to hear from you. We are particularly interested if you have experience as a mental health practitioner, SENCO, HR manager, charity finance coordinator, or housing & buildings surveyor. We would also be delighted to hear from anyone with a background in law, media & marketing or charity governance. Even if you don't have those skill sets, we would love to hear from you if you have something to offer.
