I am a member of the Somerset guild of craftsman. I have been making and selling handmade copper fumed Raku, Stoneware and Porcelain for 40 years. I have a workshop and showroom in Mosterton open daily 10am to 5pm. I also work and demonstrate to the public at Forde Abbey House and Gardens near Chard. The exhibition is open daily 11am to 5pm between March and October.
The pottery I produce is mainly Copper fumed Raku with some wood-fired stoneware and marbled porcelain.
The Raku is a fast fired in a small kiln then taken out of the kiln at 1000 deg centigrade and placed on sawdust that instantaneously combusts into flames. The flames react with the copper oxide on the pot to give you the wonderful patterns and luster rainbow effect.
The Stoneware and Marbled Porcelain are fired in a large three chambered wood-fried kiln like the type of kiln found in China. I make all the clay and glazes I use myself from raw materials found mainly in the south-west of England.
The inspiration for the decoration comes from many sources, landscape in it many moods, animal, floral and abstract.
The Marbled porcelain is handmade using coloured clays that I have produced myself with china clay, feldspar, quartz and bentonite. The colours are produced by adding %5 cobalt (blue) %5 chrome (green) %7 rutile (orange/brown). I take a small amount of each of the colours add to the white without mixing them together then throw the pot that gives you the spiral pattern within the pot. Each pot has a unique pattern that can never be replicated.
